Change the world and your marriage with random acts of kindness

woman in carSo a few months ago, I was sitting in the Chik-Fil-A drive-thru line after a terrible week.

My swollen eyes were red and stinging with each silent tear and my chest was feeling the crushing weight of a pile of bricks stacked ten feet high.

All I wanted to do was crawl in bed and be done with my week, like ‘wake me up when it’s Monday.’

Any one else know this scene?

I ordered my favorite food, aware that I wouldn’t enjoy it or even taste it in my emotional state, but I knew I had to eat and so would just do it out of necessity.

I pulled up to the window and started getting my debit card out to pay when the cashier stopped me and said, “No need, ma’am, your food has already been paid for.”

I nearly lost it.

Me? Someone paid for ME? But why?

Who am I?

That small, random act of kindness felt GIANT. I was humbled that someone who didn’t even know me would show such love and care for me to cover the cost of my meal.

My burden immediately lifted and I drove away feeling loved and cared for, grateful and even joyful.

And my food tasted amazing. HIT. THE. SPOT.

What a gift.

I’m continuing my journey through Nina Roesner’s book, the Respect Dare, and this week we’re challenged to do a random act of kindness for our husbands.

random acts 7And what timing, since next week, Feb. 14-20, is Random Acts of Kindness Week!

I can’t tell you how much fun it is for me to do random acts of kindness for strangers or friends. I LOVE to make people happy and touch their hearts with an unexpected gift, kind words or some type of practical help, like a meal.

It makes me GIDDY, especially if it’s a surprise.

So you think that someone like me would LOVE to just do random acts of kindness for my husband, right?

Well, there was a season where that was the LAST thing I wanted to do. The first time I read this dare, to do something for him without expectation of recognition or thanks from him, I can remember being like, ‘FINE.’ Whatever.

We weren’t in our sunniest of days.

Of course over the years as I’ve grown and increased in maturity, faith and gratitude for the gifts in my life, especially my husband, now I can do those little things for him with a smile in my heart, just knowing that he will know he is loved. Whether he ever says so or not. 🙂

It’s SO easy for us to do random acts for strangers, isn’t it? Hold a door, help carry extra bags, pick up a dropped book. Smile.

But what about those living right in our homes? Are we as good at showing them those courtesies? Or do we take them for granted? Maybe we’ve hardened our hearts to them based on circumstances?

If that’s you, that’s okay! I get it.

random acts 6This next week is a perfect opportunity to sprinkle joy EVERY WHERE YOU GO, starting in your home.

And how fun that it kicks off on Valentine’s Day, the LOVE day.

In John 15:12-13, God’s word says, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

As Christians, we know God’s love is sacrificial, (Jesus dying on the cross for OUR sins), unconditional (there’s NOTHING we can do to make Him love us less or even more) and completely free (we certainly didn’t earn it.)

Will you join me this next week in spreading Random Acts of Kindness in your homes, neighborhoods and communities? What small things can you do to brighten the days of those around you, starting with your spouses or other family members?

Stumped? Think about what makes YOU feel loved and cared for. What lifts YOUR spirits? What brightens YOUR day?

What do you know brightens your spouse’s day?

Now, go mark your calendars, set reminders on your phones, and follow through. I dare you!

Did you know that when you do kind things for others, it does a chemical thing in your brain that increases your feelings of affection for them? And when someone is on the receiving end, it also does a chemical thing that makes them want to pay it forward? Imagine the ripple effect of your one simple act!

The science is so cool, I encourage you to look it up!

And oh, it’s true. I DID pay it forward at Chik-Fil-A, you betcha!
